Who it's for

Clinical weight management is for adults who have found it hard to lose weight with diet and exercise alone. In most cases you'll need:

a BMI of 30 or more, or
a BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, sleep apnoea or heart disease
to be aged 18 to 69

When we'll point you to your GP

An online service isn't the safest route if you:

have diabetes
are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
have had an eating disorder, pancreatitis or severe stomach-emptying problems
have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2

Weekly injection pen

Mounjaro tirzepatide

Acts on two natural appetite hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), so you feel full sooner and for longer.

How often: Once a week
Starting dose: 2.5mg
Maintenance dose: 5mg to 15mg

A once-daily GLP-1 tablet from Lilly. Unlike some tablets, it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

Taken: Any time, with or without food

Capsule with meals

Orlistat orlistat 120mg

Stops about a third of the fat in your food from being absorbed. It doesn't act on appetite hormones.

How often: Up to three times a day
Dose: One 120mg capsule
Taken: With each main meal

Works best alongside a reduced-fat, reduced-calorie diet.

Side effects and safety

The most common side effects of weight loss injections are feeling sick, diarrhoea, constipation and indigestion. They're usually mild and settle as your body adjusts. Orlistat can cause oily or loose stools, especially after fatty meals. Your prescriber will explain how to manage side effects.

Get urgent medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction, severe or persistent stomach pain (which can be a sign of pancreatitis), vomiting or diarrhoea that leaves you dehydrated, or signs of low blood sugar. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
